1. The Statement was not Written by Hermanto Tanoto
Please take a look at the last part of the statement “I know Barbara and all the children of my late brother Polar Tanoto and we were very close at that time.” We only met Uncle Hermanto once before our father passed away. Therefore, we strongly suspect that Sukanto and his PR team forgot that this statement was actually written under Hermanto’s name.
We believe that even Uncle Hermanto himself would be pained to see the praises of Sukanto written under his name since it was very different from what we heard from him. Sukanto’s PR team probably did not know that Uncle Hermanto has personally shared certain pieces of information with us.
2. Our Father, Polar Yanto Tanoto is a Business Partner
The statement says that our father, Polar is just an employee who happen to receive shares as a gift from Sukanto Tanoto.
Our father was a partner, rather than an employee.
Every employee and businessman in Indonesia know that Sukanto and Polar are business partners. They built the business together, and set up trusts together. As matter of fact, their relationship is closer than business partners, they are brothers.
3. The Lawsuit (1998-1999) Shows the Power Sukanto Tanoto has in the Indonesian Government
The statement says that our mother filed a lawsuit against Sukanto and our grandpa, Amin Tanoto in 1998, and it furthers states that the claim was eventually dropped due to lack of evidence.
Our mother, Barbara did not sue Amin Tanoto in 1998. However, we are very happy to hear that Sukanto finally remembers the correct date of when our grandfather passed away.
Sukanto Tanoto mentioned that our mother lost a case against him in Indonesia. The name Sukanto Tanoto has been mentioned in various news articles and books outlining his special relationship with Suharto and how he got privilege from it. Sukanto’s relationship with Suharto is also well known within the family. I would be interested to know if anyone could possibly have won a lawsuit against Sukanto Tanoto in Indonesia during the Suharto era.
4. Behind the Scenes of the Scholarships & Apartment
The statement says that Sukanto is very generous that he provides a lot of money to sponsor his nephew and nieces for US education until 2009. The statement also states that Barbara has sold Polar’s shares and bought an apartment in Singapore. (We wonder who bought the shares? It only worth an apartment in Singapore.)
Regarding the scholarship, the statement takes no time to explain why the children of a CEO and shareholder of the company need to apply for scholarship from the Tanoto Foundation, nor does he acknowledge the series of illegal actions he has taken that have made it impossible for his nieces and nephews to pay the tuition by themselves.
It would be appreciated Sukanto he could explain why during the 4 years (2005-2009) that he sponsored us, he required us to meet without our mother’s presence every year and kept asking us to sign relinquishing documents and telling us our mother is an evil person.
As for the apartment, too bad Sukanto is surprised that we are not living on the street or under a bridge after he has stolen our father’s assets and bullied my family.
5. Sukanto Uses 2002 Settlement to Confuse People
The statement says that my mother filed a claim against Sukanto Tanoto and eventually the case led to a settlement in 2002.
My mother did not start the case in 2002. It was the UBS Trustee who filed the claim in the Royal Court of Jersey in 2001 because they could not believe that Sukanto Tanoto was trying to steal his nieces’ and nephew’s assets after the grantor (our father) passed away. This case is well documented in the Royal Court of Jersey.

Strictly speaking, Sukanto should never have been a part of this case. This trust was set up by our father for his children. Sukanto became a part of it because he misused his power in the management committee of our father’s Trust and directed the Trust to accept the fake debts after my father’s death and made himself a debtor. When our family was mourning of our father’s death and suffering from the financial constraint that he created, Sukanto had started actions to take over his late brother’s shares in one of the Trusts.
Sukanto likes to confuse people with this 2002 settlement. We would like to use this chance to clarify again. This settlement is only about a minimal part of the shares owned by own father. It is also not related to the claim that was brought in Indonesia. What we are talking about right now are the rest of the shares, factory lands, properties, and all other assets that Sukanto is still utilizing and using until today.
We are speaking up right now because Sukanto is still harassing our family despite having taken away the majority of the assets that belonged to our father.
When a person’s property is stolen, his life still moves on. However, the fact that his life moves on does not wash away the sin of the thief.
We are very grateful to Bisnis Indonesia for helping us publish our story. If speaking up about our family’s story can help others stand up to their abusers, it will be worth the pain and suffering my uncle continues to inflict on us. Sukanto Tanoto can bribe the officials and judges in Indonesia and throw lots of money to buy good publicity, but what he does not have on his side is truth. The fact that he jailed activists and stole his late brother’s assets will be forever tied to him.

Sukanto Tanoto’s response demonstrates better than anything else that he is a sociopath, liar and child abuser. Coldly twisting the facts while covering his rear, what a pathetic piece of garbage. I hope the stress the publicity is causing gives him a stroke.

The 2 following certificates have been confirmed are title deeds of 2 house properties registered under Polar Yanto Tanoto’s name before he passed away.
The document perfectly demonstrates 1) Sukanto Tanoto has the influence to let and NOT LET an heir to inherit an asset belongs to her late husband in Indonesia and 2) Sukanto Tanoto has the intention to receive all of the shares registered under his brother, Polar Yanto Tanoto’s name.
I guess this is the reason why Sukanto cannot respond under his own name and need to pressure Bisnis Indonesia to “replace” the news articles. Oh yes, and of course his 1/4 page ads did not address to this issue as well.
Why can’t Sukanto Tanoto respond to the news under his name? What is he trying to hide?
