Indonesia has always not been a press friendly country.
I’m a journalist who has been working in Jakarta for 18 years. It is always disappointing to see a businessman/ tycoon/ godfather used his resources to ask our company not to publish or remove a negative news.
According to the World Press Freedom Index in 2014 by Reporters Without Borders, Indonesia ranked No.132 among 180 countries. As an Indonesian reporter, I’m not very proud of the result. But I know exactly why we fall into the bottom half. Our ranking is even worse than some third world countries, such as Afghanistan, Uganda and Nigeria. (http://rsf.org/index2014/en-index2014.php)
But people are changing these days, those tycoons can not expect the younger generations to close down their blogs, twitters, Instagram, Facebook, BBM and every social media.
My suggestion is that media companies should not let those tycoons to control them anymore. Otherwise, sooner or later, the younger generation is not going to buy in the positive news you try to feed them.

I used to be a Tanoto scholar. In those days, Tanoto Foundation told me so many good things about ST but I didn’t believe it. Tanoto Foundation asked me to work for them and I refused. I live in Riau. They didn’t know my uncle was attacked by the police in a protest againts ST’s factory. He cannot work for many months. So I know ST is not a good man.
