RGM “Set Up Scene to Attack Staffs,” Says Ex-Employee

I received an email from an ex-employee of RGM (the current Royal Golden Eagle), telling me about how the management of RGM staged attacks and blamed the crime on the innocent villagers in 2001. I now present you the words of the ex-employee of RGM. His words exposed the culture of the company that was previously only visible to the insiders.

“That was the only cruelest thing I had personally came across (in my life). “

The long time insider said in details about how RGM screwed their employees in 2001 and aligned with the army to built their devil empire in North Sumatra.

PT Inti Indorayon Utama is a paper mill located in Porsea near the Lake Toba built in 1989. Due to the unending bloody clashes between the company and the local residents and the environmental impacts it brought, President Habibie ordered to shut down Indorayon on 19th March 1999. The Minister of Environment, Dr. Sonny Keraf announced that Indorayon can resume its operation on 10th May 2000. Due to its notorious history, the company changed its name to Toba Pulp Lestari in 2001.

In mid 2001, about one month after Indorayon was granted the permission to resume operation, Sukanto gifted a brand new Toyota LandCruiser to the Chief Army of Bukit Barisan Area, and requested him to send some soldiers to escort his company’s trucks that carried wood to the pulp mill. The Chief Army did not believe Sukanto’s allegation that the villagers represented a threat, and refused to provide the military security to the company besides than the “police protection” that was already granted (the polices were instructed to attack the protestors and villagers physically and their properties).

Sukanto gathered the senior RGM management team and began brain storming the next step. During that time, more than 5,000 people had joined the protest against Indorayon in North Sumatra. Sukanto believed that having the army on his side is the most effective way to intimidate and evacuate the protestors. That was when Sukanto came up with the idea to hire local gangsters to beat up his employees and set up the fake villagers attack.

Out of all of the possibilities and peaceful options he had in hands, Sukanto chose to cost his team members serious injuries to reach his goals.

 

“They worked out a heinous scheme: TO INFLICT PHYSICAL AND BODY INJURY TO INDORAYON OWN EMPLOYEE TRUCK DRIVERS BY PAID THUGS.

Aim: TO CONVINCE THE ARMY CHIEF THAT THERE WAS INDEED ANARCHY WHICH RENDERED MILITARY PRESENCE NECESSARY.”

Brilliant they thought.

Ferdinand Flores, a senior RGM employee was assigned to hire local gangsters and set up the whole drama.

One day before the incident, Sukanto, Ferdinand, senior employees and the representatives from the mafia gathered in the meeting room on the 8th floor, East Wing of UniPlaza, where the mafia was going to give them the final briefing of the plan. Before they started their presentation, Sukanto turned on the tape recorder and walked out of the meeting room, making sure that his voice would not be recorded in the tape. At the same time, keeping a voice record in hand to avoid further problems with the mafia.

The execution day came, the 3 innocent drivers began their ordinary work day, driving their ways to the Indorayon pulp mill in Porsea without knowing what their boss has prepared for them. Half way, the trucks were stopped by a group of mob, and the 3 drivers were pulled out from the trucks and brutally beaten.

The cars windows were broken.

3 company trucks were burned down.

The 3 Indorayon employees’ faces were covered with blood and were sent to Herna General Hospital in Medan, which was further from the scene but easier for the RGM employees to visit and local journalist to cover the story on the next day.

The violence left the 3 victims with severe fractures and trauma to the heads.

In the next evening, all of the RGM employees in the Uniland office were ordered to visit the 3 poor drivers in the Herna General Hospital with a crew of TV cameramen filming the whole event. The cameramen captured the condition of the severe injuries and the emotions from the RGM senior management. They also captured the scenes of some of the best actors. Without any evidence or investigation, RGM went furious, publicly criticizing the villagers for the violence. They made false statements as Indorayon employees were living under death threats from the villagers.

Without knowing the scheme, local newspaper, Waspada put the villagers’ attack on its front page on the next day.

Without knowing the scheme, the local TV channels began to widely broadcasting the villager’s attacks and RGM’s false statements.

Without knowing the scheme, the insurance company paid for the trucks repairs.

Sukanto used this incident to convince the Chief Army to provide military to guard Indorayon’s trucks for all of their future transportation. (In fact, this is not a legitimate reason to apply for National army protection. )

The 3 poor Indorayon employees, who only received minimal wages from the company may never knew that they were set up and instructed to be beaten by their boss, Sukanto Tanoto.

The police did not arrest anyone responsible for the attack.

A Toyota LandCruiser and ten of millions Rupiah (equivalent to $1,000 in 2002) to hire gangsters are all you need for upgrading your company’s security to National level. Oh yeah, and three injured employees with severe head trauma as price.

For the environmental activists and the protestors against Indorayon who had been trying to find out the black sheep among your people should stop rubbing your heads. None of your pal attacked Indorayon employees.
